If a student meets with a school counselor, it does not mean he/she is in trouble!

A school counselor is a type of helper in the school whose main goal is prevention. Counselors assist the school’s principals, teachers, and staff in providing a pleasant and safe environment where students can grow. Sometimes, non-academic issues can get in the way of a student’s learning and addressing these issues can help our students have a successful year!

What is a School Counselor?

What about Confidentiality?

Building a relationship with your child is critical and confidentiality is extremely important in building that relationship. Therefore, everything shared in counseling is kept private and will not be shared with teachers, parents, or others unless the child consents and requests assistance in sharing information. There are limits to confidentiality meaning that I will be required to report some things to the proper authorities as dictated by legal/ethical standards- these are:

  • Someone is hurting your child

  • Your child is hurting or will hurt him/herself

  • Your child will hurt someone else
